FIELD
COURSE
"Volcanology Field Techniques"
With Dr. Jocelyn McPhie
and Mr. Rod Feldtmann
Milos Island,
GREECE
April

Introduction
This field short course helps participants to develop the knowledge and
skills required for naming, describing and interpreting volcanic
successions. It combines fundamental information on how volcanoes work
and what they produce, and practical information on how to name,
describe and log volcanic facies in the field. This course will
benefit geologists engaged in regional- or deposit-scale mapping or in
drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral
exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au). No prior
volcanology
geologist
training is required.
Course Format and Delivery
The short course will be led by
Dr.
Jocelyn McPhie
and will run for 5 days on
Milos Island, Greece. Instruction will be
in the field and in English. Most outcrops are accessible via roads or
short traverses on foot.
A 1/2 day of kayaks
will be used to visit outcrops accessible
only via the sea. A comprehensive field guide will be provided.
Milos comprises submarine and subaerial, mainly felsic to intermediate
volcanic formations, the oldest of which is ~3 Ma. We will examine:
·
Felsic lavas and domes
·
Submarine and subaerial pyroclastic deposits, including diverse pumice
breccia and fountain deposits
·
Shallow intrusions and peperite
·
Altered volcanic facies.
Who should attend: This course is intended for geologists engaged in regional- or
deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral
exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite
Ni, or diamonds) and for geological survey geologists embarking on
mapping projects in volcanic successions. No prior volcanology
geology
training
is required.
The course is presented and taught in English.

Past Course Comments:
"Jocelyn has an unrivaled ability to explain and describe
igneous/volcanic rocks and the genetic processes that created them.
During my undergraduate studies I read several of her papers which I
learnt much from. However, having her in the room is so much better.
Thanks for the course, I got more out of a couple of days with her than
a semester of undergrad." -Anonymous, Perth (in-person), August 2023
The course organization, materials and presentation were absolutely
fantastic. Image-rich, the way geology shortcourses should be. -Philippe
Cloutier, President & CEO, Cartier Resources-
Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2022
The knowledge and command of the instructor was excellent. Course
organization was very professional. -Onur Gerdan,
Geologist, Tumad Madencilik -
Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2022
I was blown away by the course, really something special. I was first a
bit sceptic how the webinar course format would work with this kind of
subject but really it didn’t matter at all. And, that’s because of the
top‐class lecturer. McPhie and the professional organization team of
KLS. Thanks to all of you and I certainly will promote this course to my
colleagues. -Janne
Hokka,
Senior Specialist,
Mineral Economy Solutions,Geological Survey of Finland GTK- Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021
The knowledge of the instructor and the shared
material are invaluable. All the explanations were very clear, useful
and this has been a great investment in my career as an exploration
geologist who works in differents countries and enviroments around the
world. Thank you all! -Anonymous

Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021
Dr. McPhie was very
knowledgeable in the material and communicated the information easily
and efficiently.
Course notes were good quality and
information packed.
I think the way the course was broken
down into different concepts for each lecture worked well.
I loved this shortcourse and was a
fantastic refresher for those of us that work in volcanic terranes.
I learned a lot of new things that will
be useful on a go-forward basis.
The four day format worked well since
from my perspective, it allowed me to also keep up with my work duties
in the morning before the course started each day. -Rod Churchill, Lands & Operations
Manager, Altius Resources Inc -
Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021
This course is a good
overall review of volcanology for exploration professionals. The
course material is well organized and
Jocelyn is a patient and knowledgeable instructor. I felt like this was
all stuff I essentially knew, but hadnt thought of in a while, and it
was particularly concise and to the point demonstrating all of the
appropriate components and their relationships. I enjoyed the breakdown
of the class into 4 hour segments, allowing time for other work to occur
and not exceeding my attention span.
-Scott Petsel, VP Exploration, Metallic Minerals / TruePoint -
Hobart/Vancouver on Zoom, November 2021
The course was well prepared
and the organization was perfect.
- İlker
Bayraktar, Project Geologist, Teck Madencilik -

short exercises helped a lot to synthesize the most important aspects of
each lecture. I thank Jocelyn for sharing her knowledge and experience.
many thanks also to the organizers. About the
organization of the course, it was good, but I think that adding a day
could help to review some topics in more detail.

This course really exceeds my expectations,
Jocelyn´s knowledge and the way she prepares each module make yourself
to be connected and not lose your attention for any minute, amazing
examples and prepare yourself to deal with volcanic rocks at any stage
of an exploration project.... amazing material, perfect schedule, a good
hour intensity per day and of course, an outstanding teacher!

Jocelyn is a very talented volcanologist & a great instructor.
This course is extremely valuable for a mapping geologist or core-logger
& very applicable to mineral exploration.
- Kei Quinn, Senior Project Geologist, Constantine Metal Resources
Ltd.; Vancouver, January 2019
The hands on exercise and
detailed time spent classifying/naming real rocks is very helpful.
- Lauren Foiles, Geologist, Galore Greek Mining; Vancouver,
January 2019
The material for the
course, instructor and the organization was excellent. Material will be
very useful for my future work, as well as in the University for the
teaching of students and for the scientific work as for the description
and interpretation volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks in the altered
areas, which is always problematic. Also it was a very good mix of the
lectures and field trips. Drill core observations and interpretations
was a very good and useful lessons for the company's geologists.
- Nino Popkhadze, Scientific Researcher, I.Javakhishvili Tbilisi
State University, Institute of Geology; Konya, Turkey, October
2018
The strengths of the
instructor go without comment. One of the best professors I have had.
The course material was very well designed, focused, easy to follow and
will be a valued reference. The course was very well organized,
everything ran on time (even the field parts, which can prove
difficult), the stops were pertinent and enough time was spent at each
to fully understand the concepts presented. Good venue, as well, very
comfortable.
